Volkswagen has unveiled a police version of the Passat GTE plug-in hybrid vehicle. The Passat is one of the most popular police vehicles in Germany, so the GTE makes a great case for a police vehicle. The press release highlights the 9,.9 kWh lithium-ion battery and the expected NEDC range of 50 km. Also, cool police feature would be silently approaching suspects in EV mode

A plug-in hybrid vehicle like the GTE makes a ton of sense for police vehicles - not just sneaking up silently in EV mode Police vehicles have a bunch of 12V accessories so they can't just turn off the engine because the safety lights and radios would kill the 12V battery pretty quickly. A plugin hybrid vehicle, on the other hand, would be able to support 12V accessories for quite a while - and it could automatically start and recharge the battery when it did get low! |
